Grottos of Castellana

Grottos of Castellana
The inhabitants of Castellana used this mysterious chasm for years as a place to throw their refuse: the long silence between throwing it and its arrival on the bottom of the chasm gave shivers to the people who thought about how deep it could be and what secret laid at the bottom. On 23 January 1938, the speleologist Franco Anelli went down into the chasm and discovered the great “grave”; an enormous and beautiful grotto (the one in the photo) which was so big that you could fit the Milan cathedral inside it. This was only one of the many underground pathways and incredible grottos, all of which present beautiful carsic effects. While you walk around, you will be amazed by the centuries of work of only water and salt. The Castellan Grottos are an area worth seeing and exploring, with a surprise at the end: the White Grotto.
