Length: Km 8; difference in elevation: 350 m; difficulty : medium; time: 1h 45’ Departure: Piazzale del Podere del Butale (S. Marcello Pistoiese, PT); you can fill your water bottle here. The route follows the gravel road eastward then, at the first house with a fenced-in area for sheep, turn left onto the path CAI n° 4. You go uphill until a sheepfold with a green roof (1150 m above sea level) and then you continue until the crest. Here you can admire a spectacular view of the entire mountain chain frommonte Gennaio to Libro Aperto. The path continues and shortly takes you to the large Roncole pasture (1400 m above sea level). Here you’ll find a small hut which is left open for hikers and the numerous mushroom hunters who visit the area. Continuing for another hour, still following path n° 4, you’ll reach Lago Scaffaiolo at 1775 m above sea level.
