Trekking in Lazio
The emotion of going along the “Regina viarum”(queen of roads) is great. Twenty-four centuries of history aren’t a joke. In the 4th century B.C., the consul Appio Claudio, from whom the roads gets its name, started building the road, which was revolutionary for the region of Campania. Thanks to the perfectly joined stones and extraordinary drainage system, this 3-metre wide ribbon, with sidewalks and sufficient space for both directions of traffic, was useable in all weather conditions.
Today the Apian way is part of the park of the same name. It was established in 1988 and includes 3300 acres of Roman country side. This area is characterized by its rural scenery and historical, archaeological and geological importance. It also includes the great lava stream (12 km in length) of the Lazio Volcano.
