The countess’s leap at Gavorrano The countess’s leap at Gavorrano

This suggestive manifestation of the Countess’s leap at Gavorrano has been held since 1993 and is named for the unlucky wife of Nello d'Inghiramo dei Pannocchieschi, lord of the castle of Pietra in Maremma and Guelf captain. The lady was made famous by verses in the Divine Comedy in which her husband is indicated as being responsible for her death, apparently driven by jealousy, although there are numerous versions to the story. Pia was taken in the night to the Pietra castle and thrown from a window.
On the commemoration day, the two districts of Gavorrano - the one of the city centre called Pannocchieschi, and the one of the new town called Tolomei – compete for the ‘palio’. The type of competition changes from year to year, from a test among archers to a horse race. In addition, there is a colourful historical procession in Medieval costume and with traditional flagmen.
