This ancient challenge gets its origins from the battle between the ‘contradas’ of Fucecchio in the thirteenth century. Suspended in 1863, competition was begun again in 1981. Preparations for the challenge are exciting with the presentation of the Cencio or cloth, the object to be conquered, and the assignment of horses to the town districts. The evening before the competition is lively with succulent dinners accompanied by tradition decorations, songs and toasts. In the Buca, the field where the ‘battle’ takes place, there is the race which is brief but interminable in the souls of the district residents. In addition, there is the not-to-be-missed event, the historical procession to the present piazza Vittorio Veneto in Fucecchio with a thousand people is medieval costumes.
