City Museum of Sansepolcro

City Museum of Sansepolcro
The City Museum of Sansepolcro is in the Palazzo della Resistenza and it contains numerous works by Piero della Francesca, and more. Other artists are represented (Matteo di Giovanni, Santi di Tito, Raffaellino del Colle) but the museum is particularly known for the main figure among artisti biturgenzi, Piero della Francesca. The Misericordia polyptych, commissioned by the Misericordia del Borgo confraternity in 1445, includes what appears to be a self-portrait of the artist. There is also the fresco depicting the bust of San Giuliano, from the apse of the old church of Sant' Agostino which was then reconsecrated in honour of Santa Chiara. But dominant among all the frescoes in the City Museum of Sansepolcro is the fresco of the Resurrection by Piero della Francesca painted between 1459 and 1465; its image was put on the town banner in 1571. The work depicts Christ rising from the tomb in victory, leaning on a firmly-held, upright lance. The painting is set in a niche between two columns so that it can be admired even after hours.
