Grumentum Archaeological
Lucani, who were ousted by the Romans during their long and impressive march of expansion. The city, located about 80 km from Potenza, dominated the Agri valley and it is today a generally agricultural town. Its illustrious past can be seen mainly at the archaeological sites where an amphitheatre, aqueduct, baths and basilica have been unearthed.
Many of the artefacts from these excavations, together with others from surrounding areas, can be admired at the National Museum of the Upper Agri valley in Bosco del Principe. The museum is arranged on two floors into sections: the history and prehistory of Grumentum is divided into pre-Roman and Roman periods.
