Puglia is the least mountainous region 's of Italy: it is composed mostly of hills and plains. Among the most important are the Murge, formed by limestone and covered by karst phenomena, like the caves of Castellana. The Tavoliere, the second largest after that of Po plain is intensively cultivated.
The plain is barren of Salento and is crossed by ravines and deep cracks in the ground dug by rain. The Puglia is bordered to the north with Molise, Campania and Basilicata in the west and is surrounded by the Ionian Sea to the south and west by the Adriatic Sea to the north and east.
